ILWU Strike - Update #2

Dear Customer,

The Federal Labour Minister has invoked his statutory powers under the Canada Labour Code and has named a Mediator to draft the terms of a recommended settlement within 24 hours. After such time, the Labour Minister will share the proposal with both sides and will provide another 24 hours for them to review and communicate such proposal with their members for ratification.

In a statement released to the media, Minister Seamus O’Regan says “he has asked a federal mediator to provide recommendations for settlement within a day after deciding the two sides are not far enough apart to justify prolonging the strike. After 11 days of a work stoppage, I have decided that the difference between the employer's and the union's position is not sufficient to justify a continued work stoppage."

Minister O’Regan went on to state that a good deal was "within reach" for both parties after more than a week of negotiations to end the strike that started on July 1 when over 7,400 dock workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) walked off the job after failing to agree on a new contract with the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA).

We continue to follow developments on this situation and will provide further update as new information is made available.

Sincerely,
