Supply Chain Security – Container SealingMonday, May 27, 2024

Dear Customer,
Please kindly be reminded that it is mandatory that every container moving within the international pipeline be sealed for transport.
In an effort to help protect cargo during transit and to ensure that cargo is compliant with the sealing requirements of all domestic and international laws and regulations which include but are not limited to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) and the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) programs, full shipping containers must have high security seals properly affixed at the point of stuffing.
While seals will vary in appearance the majority of carriers prefer the high security bolt seal, that meet the criteria of ISO PAS 17712. It is imperative that the seals be secured in the proper location on the right rear door of the container. This is the most effective place to locate your seal as the right door has to be opened first.
The main function of a container seal is to ensure / prove that no one has accessed the cargo from the time the container was sealed at origin until the time the container has been received by the consignee.
Not only does the seal mitigate the risk of unauthorized access to the container thereby reducing the risk of pilferage, but the seal also prevents contraband from being placed into the container and entering the global supply chain.
It is imperative that the seal number affixed at origin be recorded to the ocean bill of lading (in the exact format in which the seal appears on the container).
It is also highly recommended that shippers take photos of the container and seal after the container is loaded to support any discrepancies reported.
Please find link to the seal management policies of some assorted vessel carriers should additional information be required.
